Awardees
Shep Shanley
The Archbishop Bernard J. Sheil award will be presented to Shep Shanley for the impactful difference he has made in the mission of Catholic campus ministry at Northwestern University.
Shep Shanley was born into an NU faculty family and grew up in Evanston, where he attended Evanston Township High School (ETHS). He went on to Princeton University, earned an M.A. in Teaching from Harvard University, and taught for four years before joining the Northwestern University Undergraduate Admission Office. He remained at Northwestern for nearly 50 years before retiring in 2020. Shep says, "I feel like I am truly part of the Sheil congregation, and that is something very special—like nothing else in my life and uniquely important to me."
Kristin Johnson Boswell
The Saint John Henry Newman award will be presented to Kristin Johnson Boswell for being an alum who live out the values of the Sheil Catholic Center at Northwestern University.
Kristin’s journey began at Northwestern, where she majored in Theater, minored in Business Institutions, and graduated from the Musical Theatre Certificate Program. Her early career took her to New York for work and an MBA at Columbia Business School. She is currently the Senior Vice President of Brand & Portfolio Marketing at HUB International. She remains an active parishioner at Old St. Patrick’s Church in Chicago, where she lives with her husband and two daughters. Deeply committed to giving back, Kristin has continued her relationship with Sheil as a past member of the Sheil Capital Campaign Board, and she currently serves on the Goodman Theatre Women's Board, and is President of the "Friends of" parent fundraising organization at her daughters' CPS school. Kristin remarks, "Sheil showed me early on that faith isn’t just where you go on Sunday; it’s the foundation you carry into how you live, lead, and love."
Maddie Joseph
The Chaplain's Medallion will be presented to Maddie Joseph for her dynamic witness of faith and leadership as a student at Sheil Catholic Center at Northwestern University.
Dr. Maddie Joseph, PhD, is a recent graduate of the Chemical and Biological Engineering doctoral program at Northwestern University, where she developed new approaches to make large-scale manufacturing more sustainable through biotechnology. Before coming to Northwestern as a second-generation Wildcat, she completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Chicago in 2022 after graduating from New Trier High School in 2018. Maddie is a lifelong local and resides in Wilmette with her parents, in the same home where she grew up with her two younger brothers. Maddie notes, "Being a member of this Sheil Catholic Community has taught me that conversion of heart is an experience that never ends and that every morning brings forth a new opportunity to awaken to the love of the God who loved me first."
