Awardees
Teresa and Dan Corcoran
The Archbishop Bernard J. Sheil award will be presented to Teresa and Dan Corcoran for the impactful difference they have made in the mission of Catholic campus ministry at Northwestern University.
Teresa’s family moved into the area when she was a teenager and she met Dan Corcoran in high school. Fifty-five years later, 50 years of marriage, 6 lovely children, and 16 loving grandchildren, they are still happily enjoying their time together and sharing it with the Sheil community. Both Teresa and Dan have ministered at Sheil, sharing their gifts with students and associates through many generations. Dan continues three decades of service at Sheil in facilities management. Teresa retired from her position of Operations Director in 2023 after more than 30 years. She says, “Sheil was such a big part of my life that it’s almost impossible to explain what it meant. The students, associates, and the staff that I was given the opportunity to work with were such a joy! The committees and councils I had been given to help support and guide me were an outstanding, dedicated resource to me. The yearly hellos and goodbyes, the laughter and tears, the praying and the many creative services, the rhythm of every new year. How lucky I was to have been given the opportunity to share and serve in this faith community.”
Harry Jansen Kraemer, Jr.
The Saint John Henry Newman award will be presented to Harry Jansen Kraemer, Jr. for being an alum who live out the values of the Sheil Catholic Center at Northwestern University.
Harry Kraemer has been connected to the Sheil Catholic Center for almost 50 years. He started attending in 1977 as a graduate student at Northwestern. He and his spouse Julie continued to attend Mass and programs after they graduated and started having children. He says, “To me, the Sheil Catholic Center is a beacon of Christianity in the world that seriously needs such a beacon. It is easy as a student to forget about what really matters in life, and the Sheil Catholic Center is a constant reminder what our Christian faith requires us to focus on.”
Ethan Garvey
The Chaplain's Medallion will be presented to Ethan Garvey for his dynamic witness of faith and leadership as a student at Sheil Catholic Center at Northwestern University.
Ethan Garvey is currently a graduate student at Northwestern, researching nano-magnetic materials and their interactions with light. During his time at Sheil, he has been a faithful leader serving in various ministries, including small groups and retreats, as well as serving at Mass as a sacristan and a member of the livestream team. He says, “Sheil is special to me because it has consistently been the place where God has called me to live out my faith. Every time I step deeper into this community, it becomes the very ground where God meets me.”
